Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho (1897—1973), known as Pixinguinha, was a Brazilian composer, arranger, conductor, teacher, flutist and saxophonist.
Pixinguinha composed popular music, mainly within the musical genre known as choro. He composed dozens of choros, including some of the best-known works of the genre, such as Carinhoso, Glória, Lamentos and Um a Zero, but his work is wide, covering almost all the most popular genres of his time.
By integrating the music of early 19th-century choro composers with contemporary jazz-like harmonies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and sophisticated arrangements, he introduced choro to a new audience and helped popularize it as a distinctively Brazilian genre.
Pixinguinha was also one of the first Brazilian musicians and composers to take advantage of radio broadcasting and studio recording technology. During the first part of his career he was an innovator, enjoying great success but also triggering controversy due to the new things he introduced. Later he became more identified with the country's musical memory and traditions of the past. Today it is a consensus to consider him a genius musician, one of the biggest names in the history of Brazilian popular music.
